What is a domain and why do you need one?

A domain name is the unique address users type into a browser to reach your website — for example, one.az or yourcompany.com. Technically, it is a hierarchical name in the global DNS (Domain Name System) that maps to the IP address of your hosting server. Without a domain, your website would only be reachable by a string of numbers — impossible to remember and impossible to brand.

By international agreement, every country has its own country-code top-level domain (ccTLD): .az for Azerbaijan, .ru for Russia, .tr for Turkey, .ge for Georgia. Alongside ccTLDs, generic domains like .com (commercial), .org (organisation), .edu (education) and newer ones like .io, .app, .studio, .tech are available.

Domain registration is a lease, not a permanent purchase. You register a domain for 1 to 10 years. As long as you renew on time, the domain stays yours; let it expire and someone else can claim it. Renewal is automatic in our system to prevent accidental loss.

Choosing the right domain for your business

The right domain choice has a measurable impact on traffic, brand recall and SEO. We help our clients evaluate domains across these criteria:

• Length. The shorter the better. 6–14 characters is the sweet spot. Avoid hyphens and numbers if possible — they are hard to dictate over the phone.
• Memorability. Can a customer remember it after hearing it once? Test it by saying it out loud.
• Brand match. Should reflect the brand name or core service. Avoid generic, forgettable strings.
• Trademark check. We verify the name is not a trademark conflict in Azerbaijan, EU and US registries before registering.
• SEO and keyword fit. Where appropriate, including a keyword (e.g. bakuhotels.az) helps rankings — but generic keywords no longer carry the weight they did 15 years ago. Brand strength matters more.
• TLD strategy. For Azerbaijan-only audience: .az is mandatory. For international audience: .com first. We often recommend registering both and redirecting one to the other.

Registering a .az domain

.az is the country-code top-level domain for Azerbaijan, operated under the AzNIC registry. ONE Studio is a long-standing partner of accredited .az registrars. Process:

1. Domain availability check. We verify the name is free across .az, .com.az, .net.az and .org.az variants.
2. Documents. .az registration usually requires identification documents (TIN for legal entities, passport copy for individuals).

4. DNS configuration. We point the domain to your hosting and configure subdomains (www, mail, admin, api, blog).
5. Activation. Most .az domains activate within 24 hours. International domains (.com, .org, etc.) activate within minutes.

What does a domain name cost?

Pricing depends on the TLD and the registration period:

• .az / .com.az — annual fee set by AzNIC plus a small administrative cost.
• .com / .net / .org — typically $10–$15 per year through international registrars.
• Premium domains — short, memorable, single-word domains can range from hundreds to millions of dollars on the secondary market. We help with brokering and sealed-bid auctions when a specific premium domain is needed.
• New TLDs — .io, .app, .studio, .tech typically $30–$80 per year.

Domain transfer and renewal

If your domain is registered elsewhere and you'd like to consolidate management, we handle full domain transfers. Process:

1. You request the EPP transfer code from your current registrar.
2. We initiate the transfer and add 1 year to the registration period (industry standard).
3. Within 5–7 days the domain is fully under our management — DNS, WHOIS and renewal — without any downtime.

We track expiry dates and renew automatically. We never let a client domain expire unnoticed — domain expiry is one of the biggest sources of business interruption and we treat it as a priority alert.

Common questions about domain registration in Azerbaijan

Can I register a .az domain as an individual (not a company)? Yes. Individuals can register .az domains with passport identification.

How long does .az registration take? Usually 24 hours. International TLDs (.com, .org) activate within minutes.

Can I register multiple TLDs at once? Yes — we recommend registering at least .az and .com for any serious brand and redirecting one to the other.

What happens if I forget to renew my domain? There's a 30–45 day grace period during which you can renew at standard cost. After that, the domain enters redemption (high-cost recovery), then drops back to public availability. Our auto-renewal prevents this entirely.

Can someone else register my brand name? If your brand is not yet registered as a domain, yes. We strongly recommend registering brand domains before public launch to prevent cybersquatting.
